Calculate the mean and the median of the numbers:
2, 3, 4, 3, 0, 5, 1, 1, 3, 2.
Solution:
First arrange the number in descending order
0, 1, 1, 2, 2, 3, 3, 3, 4, 5
So n = 10 which is even
Mean (x̄) = Ʃ xi/n
= (0 + 1 + 1 + 2 + 2 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 4 + 5)/10
= 24/10
= 2.4
Median = ½ [10/2th + (10/2 + 1)th terms]
It can be written as
= ½ (5th + 6th) term
= ½ (2 + 3)
= 5/2
= 2.5
